Our expert team of physicians work with the latest equipment and technologies to provide the highest quality of care available today, from accurately staging disease to having the ability to operate on locally advanced tumors that may be considered unresectable. What is Lung Cancer? Lung cancer takes years to develop. It results from the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both lungs. These cancer cells form lumps and disrupt the lung and/or the breathing tubes (bronchus), at times interfering with their normal function. Unfortunately, it is often not discovered until it has spread or metastasized throughout the body. Sometimes, however, lung cancer is detected earlier through a chest X-ray or other exam that has been conducted for an unrelated reason. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for men and women. It accounts for a third of all cancer deaths in our country. Each year, more Americans die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Since 1984, lung cancer has killed more American women yearly than breast cancer. Close to 90 percent of lung cancers are smoking-related. In 2004, 173,770 new cases of lung cancer were diagnosed in the United States. In 2007, the estimate is 213,380, of which 160,390 people will likely not survive, according to the American Lung Association. African American women have the highest incidence of lung cancer followed by Caucasians, Asian Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and Native Americans. The SCCA difference The difference in care that our patients receive is evident in the outcomes that they experience. Our thoracic surgeons are board-certified with special training in thoracic oncology, something less specialized community surgeons may not necessarily have, including VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery) for more minimally-invasive lung surgery. For a disease as serious as lung cancer, no matter if you're high-risk or elderly, it's important to receive care from those who have depth and expertise like that of SCCA's multi-disciplinary teams. If you would like to make an appointment at SCCA, call (206) 288-SCCA (7222). You will speak with one of our intake staff who works only with lung cancer patients and will be able to answer your questions. Lung Cancer - Virtua Health, New Jersey
There are two major types of lung cancer; each is classified by how the cell looks under a microscope. Nonsmall cell lung cancer is the most common while small cell lung cancer (or oat cell cancer) is less common, grows more quickly and is more likely to spread quickly.
